The American landscape as seen by Ansel Adams and Georgia OKeeffe was dramatically different from the landscape we see today. But how does the altered land reflect a changed society? Artist Matthew Coolidge, from the Center for Land Use Interpretation, views a landscape as an artifact that can be read, and his team at CLUI seeks to interpret the unique combination of natural forms and man-made structures that can give insight into American culture and times. Through photographs from projects around the country, Coolidge illustrates how CLUI creatively reevaluates our environment and discusses what land use reveals about modern American life.
