Eakins painted this study for a memorial to the early Philadelphia sculptor William Rush, who was one of the first American artists to work directly from the nude. Eakins's unflinching realism and his insistence on painting the nude body brought him criticism in Philadelphia, where he forged his career as America's greatest portrait and figure painter.
