Our Capital Campaign, Picturing America

Patent Office Building Exterior

The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) has entered this new century with the opportunity to pursue an exciting future in a spectacularly restored architectural landmark. The Picturing America campaign seeks critically needed support for renovation and building enhancements, as well as new endowed funds.

Today SAAM and the National Portrait Gallery, which share this historic facility, are undertaking a major public-private initiative.

Public-Sector Support

  • The federal government is making an extraordinary commitment of $166 million to create an exquisitely restored home for the museums.

Private-Sector Support

  • Together, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery are raising $50 million to underwrite a new, spectacular, glass courtyard enclosure, a groundbreaking Visible Conservation Center, and other enhancements to the building.

  • Independently, SAAM is raising $50 million to significantly strengthen its acquisitions and endowment funds.

Through the Picturing America campaign, the Smithsonian American Art Museum is transforming itself to tell the story of this nation as never before through the achievements of its artists. Through your support of the campaign, you will contribute to the perpetuation of our country's visual heritage.
