Biography of Florence Lundborg

Born in San Francisco, Florence Lundborg studied with Arthur F. Matthews and Lucia Matthews at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco, and later studied in Italy and France. In addition to designing posters, Lundborg painted and illustrated books and magazines. She won a bronze medal for three murals in the Women's Board Tea Room, California Building, at San Francisco's Panama–Pacific Exposition in 1915. She later moved to New York, where she painted murals in two high schools.

Greatly influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement in California, Lundborg believed that woodblock designs had "more of the personality of their inventor than the mechanically produced lithograph [could] possibly have." She frequently cut the blocks for her woodcuts, including those for six of her seven posters for The Lark, a humor and literary magazine to which she contributed cover illustrations and articles.
