Based on scenes that Sloan observed from his studio, Night Windows places the viewer, like the artist, in a situation characteristic of life in a crowded urban neighborhood. Like the man on the roof (scarcely visible in the upper left hand corner), we watch the neighbors with interest but we are ourselves part of the scene. The urban artist, like the city dweller, learns to live with such displays -- at once intimate and anonymous.
