George Luks
By the turn of the century Luks was an editorial cartoonist
who also drew "The Yellow Kid," a widely read comic strip
published in the New York World. On leaving newspaper
work to paint full time, about 1900, he focused on the Jewish
and Italian neighborhoods of New York's Lower East Side.
Abandoning the barbed wit and visual satire that had made
him an effective cartoonist, he portrayed the streets and
people of this densely populated neighborhood with
compassion and understanding.
