William Glackens
After a trip to Europe with Henri in 1895--96, Glackens took
a job with the New York World, a crusading newspaper that
also employed his friends George Luks and Theodore Dreiser.
He soon moved into magazine work, where his ability to
capture telling detail and comic gesture won commissions to
illustrate human interest stories as well as tales of New York
life. Drawn to the stage and especially to scenes in
Washington Square, near his studio, and other public spaces
shared by the city's diverse population, Glackens depicted
with remarkable vitality and wit the interaction of New
Yorkers enjoying leisure moments.
