George Bellows

Bellows, who dropped out of Ohio State University after his junior year, moved to New York in 1904, where he enrolled in classes at the New York School of Art. He quickly became Henri's star pupil and valued friend. Fascinated by the city, Bellows captured the raw energy of urban change, and his canvases quickly brought him to the attention of the city's leading critics. By the time he was twenty-four, Bellows was showing regularly in juried exhibitions at the National Academy of Design and winning acclaim for his powerful urban scenes. In 1909 Bellows became the youngest artist ever elected an associate of the National Academy of Design.
