Metropolitan Lives: The Ashcan Artists and Their New York explores the urban vision of the six Ashcan artists and places their work within the social and cultural context of early-twentieth-century America. This groundbreaking exhibition, which was on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, from Nov. 17, 1995 through March 17, 1996, moved then to the New-York Historical Society, New York City, New York, closing August 4, 1996. It is now available as this virtual tour.

"Metropolitan Lives" was organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and made possible in part by generous gifts from the William R. and Nora H. Lichtenberg Foundation the Overbrook Foundation and Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Schwartz. We are also grateful to the Smithsonian Institution for support through the Special Exhibitions and Scholarly Studies programs.
